Do not 'update' through software any aspect of the drives.

The data will 'stay there' if you disconnect them.

Having two drives not show up at on your desktop at once is encouraging. That likely means there is some sort of hardware and/or software conflict going on.

I Always suspect hubs first.

The odds of two drives going bad at once is unlikely.
