(51,122 posts)Try connecting them directly, one at a time, not through the hub.
With no other external USB drives connected.

(51,122 posts)Do not 'update' through software any aspect of the drives.
The data will 'stay there' if you disconnect them.
Having two drives not show up at on your desktop at once is encouraging. That likely means there is some sort of hardware and/or software conflict going on.
I Always suspect hubs first.
The odds of two drives going bad at once is unlikely.

(51,122 posts)I do not use hubs for drives, because of what you are experiencing now.
I have a Kensington hub powering audio output devices and serving as a charging unit for various low priority devices.
I cannot recommend a particular hub maker, because they All go bad eventually.

(17,701 posts)I regularly shut down my Mac with no problems. And I generally don't leave drives plugged in.
No need to have them spinning up when I'm not needing them.
The Time Machine disc gets plugged in about once every two or three days.
Passport drives have been remarkably unreliable for me. LaCie is my go to for back ups.
Sounds like the hub has died though.
