He had a great ear, expansive musical knowledge & a very open mind.
He drove them to higher branches.
The story about Please Please Me.
George, working for the record company, picked some songs for them to record. Paul & John wanted to record their own songs.
Martin told them nothing they had were as good as his choices. If they could shoe him something better than those he would agree.
They came back a day or two later with PPM. He agreed it was better than his picks. Those guys probably never write that song until George set a high bar.
