Darrell Issa Attempts to Meet Constituents at a McDonald's Drive in. It Doesn't Go as Planned. [View all]

Word got out earlier this week that at noon on Thursday, April 25, my congressman Darrell Issa (R, CA-48) would be serving people at a McDonald’s drive thru window, giving each customer a “complimentary” order of “freedom fries” (is that still a thing?) in San Marcos, not far from where I live. Issa, of course, has long had a reputation of being a terrible human being, and utterly unresponsive to the requests of his constituents (at least the ones who aren’t rich). He chaired the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee from January 2011 to January 2015, after which he lost his seat. During his tenure leading that committee, he was responsible for one of those endless investigations on Hillary Clinton, and showed nothing but contempt for the ranking Democratic congressman on the committee, the late Elijah Cummings. He returned to Congress in 2019, but as a back-bencher.
He has not held a town hall for years. Indivisible scheduled a town hall in Escondido on March 23 of this year, but nobody expected him to come, and he didn’t. There are many constituents who want to give him an earful. Instead, other community leaders answered questions from the audience.
Now, suddenly, with this McDonald’s appearance, constituents might have an opportunity to ask him some questions. As it happened,
constituents came out in force—all the ones that Issa didn’t want to talk to.
An organizer of the street rally who declined to give her name said the event’s purpose was to urge Issa to hold an in-person town hall.
