Word got out earlier this week that at noon on Thursday, April 25, my congressman Darrell Issa (R, CA-48) would be serving people at a McDonald’s drive thru window, giving each customer a “complimentary” order of “freedom fries” (is that still a thing?) in San Marcos, not far from where I live. Issa, of course, has long had a reputation of being a terrible human being, and utterly unresponsive to the requests of his constituents (at least the ones who aren’t rich). He chaired the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee from January 2011 to January 2015, after which he lost his seat. During his tenure leading that committee, he was responsible for one of those endless investigations on Hillary Clinton, and showed nothing but contempt for the ranking Democratic congressman on the committee, the late Elijah Cummings. He returned to Congress in 2019, but as a back-bencher.
He has not held a town hall for years. Indivisible scheduled a town hall in Escondido on March 23 of this year, but nobody expected him to come, and he didn’t. There are many constituents who want to give him an earful. Instead, other community leaders answered questions from the audience.
Now, suddenly, with this McDonald’s appearance, constituents might have an opportunity to ask him some questions. As it happened, constituents came out in force—all the ones that Issa didn’t want to talk to.
An organizer of the street rally who declined to give her name said the event’s purpose was to urge Issa to hold an in-person town hall.

(72 posts)The voters in his district knew he was shady, yet they continue to vote for him. Why are they upset?

When Republicans refuse to meet their constituents, that is not a good look.
Why are they chicken?
What are they afraid of?
Can they not defend their votes or their positions?
I suppose if no one mentions it, Republican voters won't even notice?
Are they zombies?

(2,501 posts)“When is the media going to stop cheerleading the most partisan Democrats in town as they harass perfect strangers for no reason and try to stop a congressman from visiting district businesses and meeting constituents desiring a real conversation?” Issa spokesman Jonathan Wilcox said via email.
(In fact, this McDonald’s is outside the 48th Congressional District and lies within Rep. Scott Peters’ 50th district.)
