the citizenship certificate is illegal. The US passport is more than sufficient. The advice to try and stay more than 100 miles from the border is a good one. However, the writer says that they are travelling on US 10 - that goes very near the coast through the Florida panhandle, Alabama, Mississippi, Lousiana and Texas so that might not be practical.
