Crackpot lawyer Sidney Powell, shredded credibility and all, shows up in Rapid City and gives a secret talk.

Sidney Powell is the lawyer who somehow attached herself to the comedy act posing as a legal team trying to convince the country that Donald Trump actually won the 2020 election. So outrageous were her widely derided claims of fraud and conspiracy that even Trump and his advisors were moved to publicly disavow the hopelessly delusional Powell.

Her lawyers have been defending her from a $1.3 billion defamation suit filed by a voting system manufacturer, which says that it was maligned by her charges. So ludicrous are Powell’s claims that even her desperate lawyers say of Powell’s alleged defamations: “reasonable people would not accept them as fact.” The flip side of that assertion is that if you accept Powell’s claims as fact, you’re unreasonable. Essentially, her defense is that she’s a phony with a big mouth, therefore she could not be guilty of maligning anyone. She doesn’t even take herself seriously.

With that backdrop, it’s a little hard to figure why some Rapid Citians think Powell is credible enough to give them a talk about . . . what? Nobody really knows about “what.” That’s because The Rapid City Journal, which was set to cover the event, was turned away at the door.

Kevin Woster did a great piece on this for South Dakota Public Broadcasting. According to Woster’s column, one of the board members of Citizens for Liberty, which hosted the gathering, invited RCJ to send a reporter and photographer. On arrival at the event the paper was told that a Powell associate would have to review the piece before it was published. Adding to Powell’s paranoia about what a local paper might say about her talk, her reps also wanted to know what the RCJ journalists thought about her. Apparently dissatisfied with the RCJ response, Powell’s people told the paper to scram.
