I was supposed to go to a Christmas party that evening, and ended up having car trouble and not able to go. Turns out due to one unexpected thing or another (emergency surgery, death in the family -- some of it really big stuff that makes my car trouble look like nothing), hardly anyone was able to go. Only 3 people showed up, including the hostess. I felt sorry for her, and tried to offer an explanation for why things turn out the way they do, but don't think she really got it.
