Most atheists don't want to use any theology at all. But when addressing believers who won't listen to anything else, or speaking to borderline believers, looking for an exit, this could be useful?

Theology can be very complicated, so I don't think it's a cognitive miser issue

Being "picky" just involves using our reason and intellect to evaluate moral claims.

I think some kind faith is necessary for communities, not necessarily religious though.
