Not all professional ball players are just dumb jocks.

Frank Rice, quarterback with the LA Rams, the Cleveland Browns, and the Washington Redskins earned a PhD in math himself early in his career.

There may have been other PhD ball players, but Rice is the only other one I'm aware of.
