11. I only remember one time not being saluted by a subordinate

I walked out of the post office at Vilseck (15 miles from Graf training area) and a pregnant soldier wearing maternity BDUs and smoking a cigarette walked right by me. For a second I thought about saying something, but given that she was pregnant and publicaly smoking a cigarette, I figured it wouldn't be worth the effort...

Honestly, I really took the simple display of a salute very personally. To me showed that I was willing to treat some lowly private's life as importantly as my own. That realization hit me hard after being deployed to Iraq. Yes, I was a screwy and very typical lieutenant, but I respected the hell out of the guys who served under me and treated them all with respect and dignity. I would like to think that they knew that.
