For cops and civilians, "shot while cleaning your gun" is often a euphemism for suicide.

Usually it's either a purposeful self inflicted wound or sheer carelessness and the finger winds up in the trigger guard while handling the gun prior to field stripping. You can't run a patch with Hoppe's #9 down a barrel with a round in the chamber.

Also, some guns, Glocks specifically, need to have the trigger pulled for disassembly and they drop the magazine and don't work the slide three times to eject any chambered rounds, the way I was taught, before disassembly.

All irrelevant to the OP of course, since it was a felon who was barred from owning any type of firearm under any circumstances.
