9. The decision to kill while in personal danger or...

...witnessing a danger to family and loved ones is a very much "at that moment" one.

IMHO, preparing for it, namely being ready to be able to kill, enables that decision for that day. Eschewing any weapon of recourse removes the option of ever being able to make that decision. I can't fault someone for not killing even if they are killed as a result. I think it's shortsighted to rule out the option. YMMV.
