as the prohibitionist outlook initially started out as an effort to ban handguns, ran into opposition, then branched out into anything that would stick on the wall. Might explain why the semi-auto carbine ("assault weapon"
was next chosen to be the hobgoblin to ban -- few people killed by those types, few (at the time) owners, similarity in looks to full auto, etc. It was the lowest-hanging fruit, so they thought.
