and his unit was string signal wire through the snow. Between being hit by German guns, or freezing to death, they lost every man whose rank was above PFC. He was a PFC and led his group out successfully; he received a Bronze Star for that.

He also had some nasty frostbite and had trouble with the skin on his feet forever. He also hated snow for the rest of his life.

My mom's brother was in the tank corp and was with Patton's army when they came to the rescue. He and my dad did not know each other until after the war.
