"A Private Affair" on Amazon Prime Video [View all]

Set in the 1940s, in the Galicia region of Spain, this well-produced, fast-paced new series follows a police commissioner's daughter (Aura Garrido) and her timid but loyal manservant (Jean Reno) as they search for a serial killer who is targeting prostitutes at a high-class brothel. Garrido and Reno are wonderfully engaging as the amateur sleuths who use 1940s-era forensics devices while blundering into one life-threatening situation after another. There are planes, trains and automobiles, and a brawl that breaks out at a high-society party, among this series' many delights. The period settings, especially the shiny '40s European cars, and Galician locations are beautiful, and the sometimes noirish cinematography is artful and vibrantly colored.
.
If you like Only Murders in the Building, this series has the same vibe of goofiness balanced with adventure. Don't skip the opening titles for each episode. They have an animated sequence that previews what will happen in the episode, and the titles and theme song are reminiscent of '60s technicolor movies.
