This seems bizarre:

“This was crazy,” he said to himself, “Nobody gets put on the ventilator and has a seizure from eating psychedelic mushrooms.”

Sounds like he thinks he talking about oatmeal, or mashed potatoes. Personally, I would expect powerful reactions to such a fungal derivative.
