It’s hard for me to understand that Spanish youth would be flirting with fascism this soon after Franco’s regime. I lived and travelled in Spain for several months in 1972. The Guardia Civil patrolled the streets with automatic weapons, a constant reminder of who was in charge. There was an undercurrent of fear and oppression. Land that had been tended by families for generations was sold off to wealthy Brits and Germans after the war, and the Spanish people became their servants.

One hopes that the Spanish youth tap into the pro-democracy movement happening in Canada, Australia and elsewhere, before it’s too late.
