(116,516 posts)LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) - Mike Pence, the governor of Indiana, did what most newly anointed Republican running mates do: He praised the man at the top of the ticket for picking him, he expressed gratitude to family and God, and he got in a few biographical details and lines of attack against his general election opponent.
Donald Trump introduced his choice of vice presidential candidate by offering a narrative about his experience with Pence. But more often than that, he veered off into his own thoughts about the campaign, his Old Post Office development in Washington, Bobby Knight, and the attempted coup in Turkey. "So many friends in Turkey," Trump said.
The primary reason he wanted Pence, Trump said, was his ability to bring down Indiana's unemployment rate -- "other than he looks really good."
The rollout of the running mate is typically the turning point for the campaign -- carefully crafted and scripted. Why should Trump be expected to follow those rules of the road?
