I would never install Norton or McAfee on any of my computers.

Definitely, do not install McAfee. It's resource intensive and very hard to get rid of.

So, why would Asus recommend McAfee? Why does it come as a "trial version" on many new PCs?

Simply because McAfee pays them to put it on there.
