because I had made the switch back to the classic view a month or so ago and suddenly my email changed back to the new format. The option to switch back no longer exists and apparently was only good through the end of September. Google forced everyone onto the new format effective October 1st. You can choose "Display Density" and the "Compact" - that gets it pretty close.
