One would think that might be relevant to the story.

Copyright laws are often misunderstood or ignored by a vast number of people who feel that anything they can find on the internet is fair game. That includes music, photographs, and printed words.

Look at all the people that try and circumvent paywalls or steal photographs and republish them.

IF the proper rights are purchased through a clearinghouse like BMI, the artist doesn't maintain veto power, as far as I know. I'm not in the music industry, so correct me if I'm wrong.
