They just elected a lefty government (the New Democrats) in 2015 for the first time in several decades. The Conservatives rode high on HUGE oil profits that made Alberta the economic envy of the rest of Canada up until oil prices went bust a few years ago. Then it became painfully obvious that the Conservatives failed to impose higher taxes when the good times were rolling and never created much of a "rainy day" fund, so the funds on the sidelines were quickly absorbed.

Of course many Conservative supporters are trying to pass the blame onto the New Democrats, but they inherited a MESS (not a Donald Trump fictional mess, but a real mess). It's deficits that are the reality now.
