The firearm issued to a soldier is not the soldier's property. It is, like the soldier, property of the state, and merely put in the soldier's hands for purposes of state. It is not for the soldier to use outside rules of engagement, and sergeants will make sure the soldier knows it.

This breeds a much different mentality than does the personal purchase of a totem for fetishistic display of masculinity.
