HARRISBURG Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro has emerged as a top contender for the vice-presidential nod following President Joe Bidens stunning announcement that he is dropping out of the 2024 race and endorsing Kamala Harris to take his spot on the ballot.
Shapiro, 51, was elected Pennsylvanias governor in 2022 and assumed office in January 2023. He is a moderate Democrat whose career trajectory has seen him move from congressional aide to Pennsylvanias chief executive, all within two decades.
Already, top elected Democrats in Pennsylvania like state House Speaker Joanna McClinton and party leaders like Philadelphia Democratic chair Bob Brady have endorsed Shapiro as a possible vice presidential pick, citing his wins in a divided General Assembly and electoral success in a key swing state.
At a Monday afternoon event in Pittsburgh, Shapiro said he has spoken to both Biden and Harris, but declined to say whether he is in talks to join the ticket.
