title-Ohio Attorney General Sues Norfolk Southern Over Derailment
snip-"The Ohio attorney general filed a 58-count federal lawsuit against Norfolk Southern on Tuesday, charging that the derailment of a train carrying hazardous chemicals last month in the village of East Palestine was a product of the companys negligence and recklessness, posing serious health risks to people in the area and causing substantial damage to the regional economy.
The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, accuses Norfolk Southern of numerous violations of state and federal environmental laws; it also raises claims of public nuisance and trespass. It seeks to force the company to pay civil penalties, costs and damages to reimburse the state for economic losses and harm to natural resources.
This derailment was entirely avoidable, the attorney general, Dave Yost, said at a news conference in Columbus announcing the suit. Im concerned that Norfolk Southern is putting profits for their own company above the health and safety of the cities and communities that they operate in.
