How Richard Cordray's impending entry into the governor's race changes the game [View all]
CLEVELAND, Ohio - The wait-and-see over Richard Cordray's gubernatorial run has come to an end.
Cordray's announcement Wednesday that he's leaving his post as director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau coupled with an expected gubernatorial announcement later this month, changes the dynamics of an already crowded primary, albeit expectedly. Barring a surprise entrance from TV personality Jerry Springer or former U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, he would round out the field of six Democrats.
Cordray's exit from the CFPB comes after months of butting heads with Republicans on Capitol Hill and within President Donald Trump's orbit. Trump confidant Corey Lewandowski attacked Cordray without much provocation during a television appearance in July and U.S. Rep. Jeb Hensarling of Texas has gone after Cordray repeatedly.
Cordray's easily the Democratic name with the most hype. Democratic fundraising was incredibly depressed during the last reporting period. Every single Republican outraised the all the Democrats. Republican Secretary of State Jon Husted outraised the Democratic field.
