But the landlord passed out an email--said there was a bucket of salt out in front of the office for tenants to take home in their bucket--you think that means: You want your front door free of ice and snow? Do it yourself, suckers! We didn't contract for that, and the two on-call maintenance staff got better things to do (like HVAC problems and frozen leaking pipes when you guys don't drip your faucets and open your cupboard doors as we recommended two days ago?).

Last year we went off to kid's house, faucets adrippin' and cupboard doors open, and just happened to see our address on a fire call app (Water emergency on PulsePoint) and rushed home. They had busted in the locked front door to check for damage -- seems the pipe to their outdoor faucet between the units froze and ruptured. Why? No access panel or valve shut-off...Our neighbor got the new access panel after a shut-off valve was installed...we sucked up the water in our carpet ourselves...Wonder if they'll turn the valve back on next spring so we can easily water the North 40 Inches of garden???? Hmmm...for some reason (ghost of holiday ruptures past?) it had been the only outdoor faucet that worked over a larger complex, some apartments/some townhomes.
