After almost a year of complex battles waged in jargon-filled hearings and thousands of pages of documents, the dust began to settle Friday on the Tampa Electric bid to hike its customers' rates over the next three years.
The Florida Public Service Commission, which oversees utilities, released paperwork showing the expected impact of the regulators’ decisions on customer bills. Commissioners took a series of votes last week in the case, one of which rejected a staff recommendation and will allow Tampa Electric to continue shifting millions in costs from large corporate power users onto residential bills.
As a result of the regulators’ decisions, a typical household will spend between about $9 and $13 more per month on their electric bills next year, according to figures from the company. Those dollar amounts are for 1,000 kilowatt-hours and 1,250 kilowatt-hours, respectively.
The average monthly consumption of Tampa Electric households is about 1,110 kilowatt-hours, according to the utility data firm FindEnergy, though consumption varies greatly depending on the season. Customers can check how much energy they use each month on their bills.

It's the Republican way of overseeing utilities. Approving commercial customer rate reductions and hiking the consumer rate to cover the income shortfall. (And just FYI TECO is owned by a Canadian corporation.)
