UConn Leaders Reassessing Raises In Discussions [View all]

After being blasted by top legislators for awarding large salary increases and bonuses at a time when the state is in financial crisis, UConn Board Chairman Lawrence McHugh said the university leaders are now in the midst of "serious discussion" about those financial packages.

"There is serious discussion now looking at the whole thing," McHugh said in an interview Thursday, referring to the financial packages, but he added that "no final decision" has been made.

Senate leaders who have been in discussion with UConn leaders say they are expecting the university to take action on the controversial pay packages soon.

"Based on my recent conversations with high-ranking UConn officials, I believe that that the university's leadership understands the outrage associated with these excessive raises and bonuses for high-level staff," Sen. President Pro Tem Martin Looney of New Haven said in a statement Thursday. "I expect that UConn will take immediate action."
