Certain leaders of "our" party let them frame it by buying into it and aknowledging it and not calling bullshit on the myriad ways this was a made up crisis.

The minute "we" started allowing "our" leaders to negotiate over this, the minute they won.

That's what happens when certain leaders are more concerned about what the David Brooks and the Richard Cohens and the Joe Scarboroughs and the Tom Friedmans and the Peggy Noonans and other "centrist" pundits who serve as mouthpieces for GOP talking points think than what is actually right and what actual economists think.
