Starbucks is making a major change to its rules that may affect your next bathroom break.
On Monday, the Seattle-based brand shared a new code of conduct with its store employees, announcing that it's ending its open-door policy, which has allowed people to use its cafe spaces and restrooms without making a purchase. As CNN reported, the new rule is part of CEO Brian Niccol's plan to improve the coffee chain's cafe experience.
The different policy, Starbucks outlined in its newly published code of conduct, is "something most retailers already have and is a practical step that helps us prioritize our paying customers who want to sit and enjoy our cafes or need to use the restroom during their visit. This means our cafes, patios, and restrooms are for customers and partners." The company added that, “By setting clear expectations for behavior and use of our spaces, we can create a better environment for everyone. These updates are part of a broader set of changes we are making to enhance the cafe experience as we work to get back to Starbucks.”
The code of conduct also notes that no "misuse or disruption of our spaces" will be tolerated, and outlines a zero-tolerance policy for "discrimination or harassment, violence or abusive/threatening language, consuming outside alcohol, smoking/vaping or drug use," in addition to banning panhandling in stores.
