(37,721 posts)on Bill Graham's houseboat. Otis Redding (and backed up by Steve Cropper) had just finished up at the '67 Monterey Pop Festival and Graham was able to book him for a gig in SF the following weekend and offered the houseboat to Redding and Cropper.
As to your specific question, I'd hazard a guess and say Isaac Hayes. Curiously, Cropper recruited Isaac Hayes to replace the college bound Booker T. as a Stax session keyboardist. Possible the smartest thing Cropper ever did was pairing Hayes and Porter together and setting them loose.
Side note: Stuart Brand (Whole Earth Catalog) purchased the table that Otis Redding purportedly wrote "The Dock of the Bay" on from a reputable Sausalito antique store owned by Julia Child's sister (She was about a half an inch taller then Julia).
