The term mafia state was pioneered by Bálint Magyar, a sociologist in Hungary, Russias closest ally in Europe.
Magyar and his colleagues have elaborated on the concept in the last decade, as Hungarian leader Viktor Orbán has amassed power, eliminated political and economic rivals, and turned the institutions of his state into instruments of personal power. So important is this concept to Hungarian intellectuals understanding of what has happened to their society that an edited collection of twenty sociological articles on the topic sold 15,000 copies therean almost unheard-of figure for an academic volume anywhere, especially in a country of 9.8 million people.
The concept is little-known outside of Hungary, though Magyar believes it describes the regimes in three other post-Communist states: Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Russia. (Magyars own book, Post-Communist Mafia State: The Case of Hungary, has just been translated into English.)
Someone should write a book about where the right has been trying to take America that last few decades.
