(18,089 posts)One query I have for vegetarians, what if it became reasonably certain that plants have feelings, too? Then you can no longer assert that your survival is not dependent on the pain of other sentient beings. I find this question interesting, because in many ways your survival already depends on the pain and exploitation of other sentient beings, whether you would have it so or not. We can, it appears, compartmentalize or ignore this fact, and clearly if plants suffer, we must also accept that we live on their pain as well. Arguably, all we can do is lessen our footprint as much as possible, and thus abstaining from inflicting suffering on animals is a way of doing so; but in any case, suffering will be inflicted for your convenience, and all we come down to is what suffering we are prepared to inflict, and what not.
