(36,922 posts)A single grass fed cow can fulfill the high quality protein and fat requirements of one person for about 1-2 years depending on their activity level. Cows are generally pastured on land that is ill suited for much else. It can be pointed out that cows displace land which could be used for indigenous bison or other native species, but it's hard to imagine that number would be very many over and above what there already are even if all cattle production ceased forever.
Now compare that to the number of animals dispatched or otherwise terminated in order to produce the same amount of protein and fat by other non-livestock means and it's not hard to imagine that number is considerably higher.
So if one truly wants to respect all of our animal "sisters", it seems the argument can be made for eating grass fed beef in lieu of high quality vegetable sources of protein and fat.
