(8,507 posts)With the exception of local honey, I am also a vegan for ethical reasons. After flirting with vegetarianism for many years, I gave up meat for good after watching Food, Inc. Later I gave up dairy when I understood how calves are separated from their mothers so we can drink the milk, and I gave up eggs when I understood the suffering of factory hens. Maybe someday I'll go back to eggs from local, free-roaming chickens, but probably not. I don't miss them.
I don't often preach about veganism or even vegetarianism, but since we're on the topic, I'll encourage people to learn about the link between the beef industry and global warming. We often feel powerless to limit our greenhouse gas emissions, but reducing or eliminating our beef consumption is probably the most powerful and easiest step most of us can take.
