(56,594 posts)How does the main concept or a concept of a video, or zen parable, or sutra, or joke apply to the current situation and meditate on that until you come up with some kind of an answer, some kind of a connection, even a joke (though true flippancy is a zen skill indeed). Some way each concept relates to your (our) current situation. Making the connection really does help make it lighter and easier to bear.
The current situation just is.
There are things you can do, things you can't influence directly, and (one hopes) the wisdom to tell the two apart. The ones you can't influence directly, well they are out of your control, so letting go of them can only benefit you. If you find the ones you can do, choose one (any one) and do it. That help too. Many will recognize that in many forms.
Use the first paragraph as the analysis and the previous one as an organizer.
Meditation is all about guiding the Ox of your mind back to the task at hand, be it cleaning the dishes or watching your breath while seated. There are ten stages of Ox herding.
The main thing about meditation is to do some. When you can and you want to. Cultivating the idea of wanting to doing some. Training helps but training is not necessary; starting is necessary.
Always maintain a Beginner's Mind. The thing Roshi Suzuki liked best about America was Beginner's Mind.
