Perhaps the greatest gift the United States has given to the world is the Bill of Rights, the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution, which protect the civil liberties of all people on American soil.

Whether they flew across the Atlantic from Europe for vacation, or waded across the Rio Grande from Mexico for safety, the U.S. Constitution applies to everyone on our land.

This needs to be urgently remembered and loudly vocalized by all Americans who believe the Constitution is the bedrock of our democracy, as the Trump administration ratchets up its sweep of undocumented people.

As ICE agents carrying long guns and outfitted for war illegally shake down people to show papers as proof of their identity and immigration status, we need to arm ourselves with the document Patrick Henry called “an instrument for the people to restrain the government.”
