After Daniel Jeffers was sentenced to 280 days in the DC Jail, he asked the judge if he could approach the bench. Standing beside his attorney, Carrie Weletz, Jeffers requested to be placed in protective custody. He told the judge that he previously spent several years overseas working to “penetrate Russian intelligence networks.”

Weletz recognized Jeffers statements as the sort of delusional thinking that likely landed him in front of Judge Robert Rigsby in the first place. She followed up with a request that Jeffers be housed in the jail’s Central Treatment Facility, where he would have more readily accessible mental health support.

Rigsby agreed to place Jeffers in protective custody, but said he couldn’t guarantee placement in CTF. The last time he tried to order a person’s placement in the jail, he said, “I got chewed out.”

On Nov. 25, Jeffers was found unresponsive in his cell. He was later pronounced dead in the hospital. His death has been ruled a suicide.
It's hard to capture in just four paragraphs the scope of this (not long) article. But anyone who says "well, I hope he gets the help he needs in jail" reads it.
