He's full of himself. Wanted to prove to all that he was powerful. He made threats because he believed his own hype and expected everyone to fold.

China called his bluff. He has too much pride to back down, no matter what. He has said that backing down in a fight is literally the same as death. That's why when he does back down, he has to twist things to make himself the winner, no matter how preposterous.
