so potentially China's investment might come in the form of this high speed railway and it can traverse that line in < 1 hour while a ship crosses the panama canal between 8-10 hours assumnig they get the green light to start the traverse (as previously noted waiting times can be as long as 2 weeks)

so it boils down t speed of offloading/loading the cargo onto railways - china has this expertise as well
