Haitian Creole is a genuine language. It is not "some version of French" any more than "English is some version of French" just because the French conquered England in 1066. Haitian Creole is similar to French and many Haitians speak French. But saying Haitian Creole is "some version of French" is like saying that Portuguese is some version of Spanish. I have heard this locally from Democratic party officials (we have a large Haitian community locally) but it is not true, and it seems to me dismissive to me of the first culture to overthrow slavery and establish their own country.
