Scuttlebutt from around town about the debate

I went to breakfast this morning at McDonald's. In this town, if I want to touch base with homeless people I go to Burger King but if I want to overhear Trumpsters I go to McDonald's. Well today I hit the jackpot.

There were these two Trump supporters talking their usual BS, and one says, "Hey did you hear the democrat (sic) debate last night? I bet the Democrats are going to put all their money behind Biden. What a way to go. That's why we have who we have now." (That comment surprised me.) Then he said something totally unexpected, "None of those candidates were any good... except one. It was... the one I can't pronounce... you know that... gay guy. He was really good... the only one who looked and sounded like a president. I liked what he said."

I'm just passing this along. The comment about Biden is not my sentiment. But for these Trump supporters to say something that sounds like they are done with Trump and actually liked Pete just blew me away.

Republicans, particularly veterans, respect Mayor Pete's background and his message. Conversely, the homophobic Republicans want him to go away.

But, if Pete is part of the 2020 Democratic ticket, there's a possibility he could help bring some voters over from the center-right.

have turned against him and swear they will vote for whoever the Democrats nominate.

I guess will find out on election day if people are speaking truthfully.

but I was struck by this comment from the McDonald's guy about Pete:

"He was really good... the only one who looked and sounded like a president. I liked what he said"

I've gotten so stressed out by all the speculation and the talking-head chatter that I've deliberately stayed away from MCNBC, CNN, "live commentary," and all the rest for more than a week now, and I just watched the debates as is, with no one telling me what I should "watch for," who was up, who was down, who dissed whom, who Trump's supposedly scared of, etc.

And watching Pete last night, I had the same reaction as the guy from McDonald's. Yes, several candidates had their "breakout moments" and got media attention the last two nights, but it was only when watching Mayor Pete that I had the feeling that I was listening to, and watching, a president.
He's the real thing.
