Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumThe Pandemic Makes the Bernie 2020 Campaign More Vital Than Ever
Pressure on Bernie Sanders to quit the presidential race is intensifying. Over the weekend, the Washington Post splashed a major story under the headline "Some Top Sanders Advisers Urge Him to Consider Withdrawing." While sheltering at home, comedian Larry David couldnt curb his enthusiasm for an end to the campaign, telling a New York Times columnist: "I feel he should drop out. Because hes too far behind. He cant get the nomination."
OK, at this point its highly unlikelythough still possiblethat Sanders can gain enough delegates to become the Democratic nominee. But the Bernie 2020 campaign has never been only about winning. It has always also been about strengthening vital progressive movements while widening public discourse and political space.
(snip)
Yet now, to hear mass media and the party establishment tell it, Sanders should immediately cease expanding the public discourse during this election cycle. Demands that Sanders quit the race are getting louder by the dayinsisting that he function like a traditional politician rather than a movement candidate.
But those calls for normal political behavior are coming at a time when conditions are anything but normal. The coronavirus pandemic is a truly unprecedented life-and-death emergency on a scale so vast that its difficult to comprehend. The conditionsand timeworn assumptionsthat have made it so deadly in the United States go far beyond the criminal negligence of top officials in the Trump administration.

You just admitted that Bernie was risking American lives and livelihoods. Your words. Not my words, yours. Joe is not the one digging his feet in the sand saying he refuses to quit when he has no chance to win.
Joe's Coronavirus forum the other night was wonderful as he tried to help concerned parents and children. For Joe, he is all about the American people and understands the long hard haul it will take to tilt our axis upright again. It is going to take years.

(2,760 posts)Tell me in a non-sound bite way how he is helping Trump. He is not runing down Biden in any way, he is daily showing how rediculous Trump and his handling of the Covid-19 issue is, he is simply adding a much need voice to this crisis. If Bernie had 200 delagates more than Biden would you be demanding that Joe drop out? I don't think so. If your chosen candidate is so weak he can't share the moment with anyone, then you need to take stock.
At this critical time we need all the rational voices to speak out and that includes Senator Sanders. He is hurting no one by staying in so that he has a forum that allows him to reach a bigger audience in a crisis that gives support to one of his major issues, Health Care for All.
I don't mean this as any criticism of VP Biden, but if you want to take it that way to justify an alert on me, go right ahead.

The longer he stays in, the less time he will have to rally his supporters to Biden (if he is actually so inclined), and so all he will accomplish is hurt Biden's chances of beating Trump.
That's all there is to it.
We all know what the issues are; this is no longer some theoretical discussion of differing approaches.
We need to kick Donald Trump out of the White House. The continued campaign of Bernie Sanders does nothing to help that goal, and becomes a greater hindrance every day.

(96,043 posts)I am quite fond of the Confucian 'Analects' and have read as well in the more recondite 'Spring and Autumn Annals'. The name derives from Latinization of Kong Fuzi (there are some diacriticals beyond the fonts here), meaning 'Master Kong', Kong being the family name. That comes first in Chinese style. Our ambassador to China towards the end of WWII was apparently unaware of this, and spoke of Chiang Kai-Shek as 'Mr. Shek', roughly equivalent to using 'Mister Joe' in addressing Mr. Biden.
The italicized quote I often append in this forum to my posts is the signature line I have used here for ages, and shows in posts outside this forum still. It is a slightly condensed presentation of a key speech in the 'Analects', when Master Kong is asked by a pupil why the first thing he would do as ruler was attend to 'the rectification of names'. I have substituted 'people become uneasy' for 'rites and rituals cannot be performed properly' because the latter would convey little meaning to most people reading it here, and uneasiness among the people was a consequence of poor ritual performance, which interfered with their proper relation to Heaven.
"When things are not called by their right names, what is said cannot make sense. When what is said does not make sense, what is planned cannot succeed. (1,089 posts)Closest I've come to that area are some excellent books on Tibetan Buddhism...some by the current Dalai Lama as well as other lamas like Sogyal Rinpoche. I sometimes squeeze these in between history and science.
What I've learned so far is that Tibetan Buddhism teaches us that "nothing is permanent"...but that's okay because quantum physics is discovering that "nothing is real" anyway!

(96,043 posts)Look up a fellow known as Baron Roman von Ungern-Sternberg, who operated in Mongolia around the end of the Russian Civil War. Strange stuff....
In fact, Buddhism in China generally takes on characteristics quite foreign to Western conceptions. It has sprouted apocalyptic millennial cults, such as the White Lotus, which have given rise to major armed rebellions in the last few Imperial centuries. Militia movements, such as the 'Big Swords' and 'Red Spears' (no relation to the Communists), were prominent early in the twentieth century, raised and led by Buddhist monks, operating to defend localities from bandits, and against the Japanese in Manchuria.
As you may be guessing, this is one of my subjects, and I am attached to it. I should have realized how 'Master Kong ' might have been taken, and stuck to the familiar name.

(1,089 posts)and what men actually do with it are two totally different things. I would hazard a guess that far fewer people have been killed because of Tibetan Buddhism than have been slaughtered by those quoting from the Bible, the Torah and the Koran. But sounds like you would know better than I if that is a good guess or not.
I'm not a real big fan of any "organized religion"... but I must admit I've sometimes found some small amount of solace in scratching just the surface of Buddhism during the loss of some family members or friends in the past. But quite honestly I also find just as much comfort studying science...whether the topic is the entire Universe covered by cosmology or the infinitesimal world of quantum physics.

(96,043 posts)I am simply pointing out that what makes it over here is what one might call 'high' Buddhism, and often bears little relation to actual common practice where the faith is widely held. I have found Confucian and Taoist writings illuminating and enlightening, but am under no illusion that what I perceive in them would come close to what someone sitting for the provincial exams a few centuries ago took them as meaning.

(1,089 posts)Learning history is easy...comprehending it is the hard part.
It's almost impossible to study past history whether recent or ancient without viewing it through skewed 21st century eyes. The people during the time being read about had different values, customs, morals and knowledge than we do now. Plus with our hindsight we know what happened as a result of the choices they made or did not make. Our past was their future so we can know what they could not.
It's very difficult for most people to erase these inevitable biases from our minds and put ourselves back in time to when these people were alive and breathing. That's why it sometimes helps to read works that were written by eyewitnesses or not long after the period in question and how I slowly learned that "newer" isn't always "better" when it comes to history books. Unlike science...LOL.

I admit that I never considered sanders to be a serious candidate and never understood sanders appeal. sanders has no significant legislative accomplishments in his time in Congress in large part because sanders never bothered to attempt to get his fellow members of congress to support his programs. In the real world, it takes hard work and getting along with people to get major legislation passed. I was not surprised with sanders admitted that he does not try to get along with his fellow members of congress and that he was not good at pleasantries
Link to tweet
I agree with the NYT description of their decision not to endorse sanders in that sanders is too inflexible and that he is not able to compromise. Compromise is key to getting legislation adopted in the real world

I admit that i do not understand sanders magical voter revolution that sanders claims will enable him to get his agenda adopted. I do not believe in magic and I have seen no evidence that sanders has a magical voter revolution.
Here is on one more question
Link to tweet
Merely announcing a proposal is meaningless in the real world One needs votes to get a major piece of legislation adopted and sanders has not shown that he can do this in the real world
How is sanders going to get anyone in Congress to pay attention to this proposal without his magical voter revolution?
I like the real world and in the real world magic does not work. I doubt that the real world is taking sanders all that seriously
