Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumSenator Sanders, I'm afraid, built a coalition of supporters
based on discontent. Sadly, for him, discontent can only produce limited results, and such supporters can be fickle, in the end.
His support, I believe, was based less on his political positions on issues than on discontent with how this society chooses its leadership. It is easy to find people who are unhappy with current leadership. We all are unhappy with the person taking up space in the White House, for example. We are Democrats, after all, and Donald Trump is sort of a Republican.
However, a majority of Democrats are not discontented with Democratic policy positions, as stated in our Party's platform. That is reflected in the primary results after all but two serious candidates dropped out of contention. After that, it was clear that Senator Sanders did not have enough supporters to carry him to the nomination.
In the post-Super Tuesday primaries, turnout of youthful Sanders suppoters was low and his election results were not what he had hoped for. As I said in the first paragraph, supporters who support out of discontent are fickle. Like most people, they saw that Senator Sanders would not prevail and simply stayed away from their polling places.
Now, however, we have a life-threatening pandemic gaining strength. Bernie Sanders has no effective response to that, so low turnouts in future primaries will, once again, not include the fickle.
Sorry, Bernie. It's not going to work out for you in 2020. You took another stab at getting the Democratic nomination, but it is not to be. Please withdraw and endorse Joe Biden so we can unite behind our nominee and focus on staying alive.
Thank you.

Then, it was that Biden had disappeared.
Now, it's a sexual assault story that even Fox News won't touch.
A better question might be: when will you have had enough of your candidate's campaign promoting false smears?

(147,483 posts)Giving my opinion on the Primary race? Is that not what this forum is for?
Of hoping to defeat Donald Trump in November? Is that not what DU is all about?
Of supporting the leading Democrat in the primary race? I will never have enough of that.
So, what do you think I should have had enough of? I have had quite enough of attempts to defeat Democrats who run for President. Of that, I have had more than enough.

(147,483 posts)Then, I will shift to GOTV efforts to help that nominee win. At this time, there are still two candidates. I support Joe Biden for the nomination. I will continue to point out why Senator Sanders should withdraw, because he cannot win the nomination and we need to move on to the next phase in defeating Trump.

(15,815 posts)you call Centrists on this website are actually progressives who have a different idea of how to get to the same goals. They believe that these goals will only be achieved through incrementalism and compromise. Thats what I believe, at least.

I think you explained it very well. I'm so tired of being called a "centrist" or "moderate". It is a political tactic that denigrates a large portion of the Democratic party. Who gets to decide who is liberal?

(5,969 posts)I often see a misconception among BS followers about what "centrists" stand for. I think that there is much overlapping in regards to basic principles but different paths to get there. Promises and ideas aren't enough, you need a way to achieve it as well.
So instead of being vague and assuming what a non-monolithic group believes, why not voice what you are "looney" about.
I'll start with some examples that too many believe only BS stands for or has plans for: (Affordable) healthcare for all, fair wages, climate change, affordable education.

(49,696 posts)Where we differ is on the solutions to our problems and the person most capable of solving those problems. Many of us are not "centrists" or "moderates". We just don't think Bernie is the right person for this moment and we don't all agree with his approach for fixing the many issues facing us.
There is so much more to being president than a laundry list of policies and big rallies. A president has to be a decision maker and a diplomat, capable of compromise. He/she has to be flexible, able to absorb new ideas and points of view. And right now people need more hope and inspiration and less angry indignation.

(1,315 posts)If you had surgically analyzed what Sanders was sloganeering, youd have known that none of his false promises had an iota of a chance of passing.
One cannot complain about being hungry and simply dream of steak and lobster. That will cause death by starvation.
Prudent hungry people start with crackers, ramen noodles, mac & cheese and a can of beans. Then keep working towards a hot dog, then hamburgers and keep marching towards their steak and lobster.

(96,043 posts)I suspect he knows this, and if he does not, that is an even heavier charge against him.
"From Bernies perspective, dropping out of a race once you have no chance of winning is peculiar behavior that can only be explained by the work of a hidden hand. For most politicians, though, it is actually standard operating procedure. Only Sanders seems to think the normal thing to do once voters have made clear they dont want to nominate you is to continue campaigning anyway."
"When things are not called by their right names, what is said cannot make sense. When what is said does not make sense, what is planned cannot succeed. When plans do not succeed, people become uneasy. When people are uneasy, punishments do not fit crimes. When punishments do not fit crimes, people cannot know where to put hand or foot."
