Harris Wins Guam Territorial Vote

Last edited Tue Nov 5, 2024, 01:54 PM - Edit history (1)

Update: Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz took the lead in Guam’s presidential straw poll.

The Democrat team won 13,510 votes, 49.46% of those cast as of 1:30 a.m.

Former President Donald Trump and Ohio Sen. JD Vance took 12,624 votes, 46.22%.

While Guam residents can’t vote for president, Guam votes cast in the presidential straw poll are among the first cast and counted on American Election Day.

Island voters have predicted the winner of the popular vote for president in every race since 1980.

Previously...

Voters on Guam will be the first to cast their ballot on American Election Day but the act of voting for president is symbolic and does not count toward the national tally because Guam has no members of the Electoral College.

Guam and other U.S. territories like the CNMI and Puerto Rico are not eligible to elect members of the Electoral College like other states, but Guam instead conducts a non-binding presidential straw poll during the general election that has no impact on who actually wins the U.S. presidency.

And unlike U.S. citizens who live in foreign countries, Guam residents aren’t allowed to vote absentee from states.

To many, this is disenfranchisement and proof that Americans living in the U.S. territories are treated as second-class citizens. They can’t vote for their president, but the U.S. president can send them to wars, among other sentiments.

Amidst this strong sentiment of disenfranchisement and what’s considered meaningless exercise, Guam’s presidential straw poll has predicted the winner of the popular vote since 1980.

Polls closed at 8PM local time, about an hour ago. No results yet.
