Guam lawmakers to vote on budget override
Members of the 34th Guam Legislature are scheduled to meet at 2:30 p.m Saturday at the Guam Congress Building. The call to session was announced by Speaker Benjamin Cruz, D-Tumon and will address Gov. Eddie Calvo’s veto of the fiscal year 2018 budget bill.
The “override session” will give lawmakers another opportunity to consider the budget bill, the way money is allocated, and the effect it will have on Guam’s future, according to the speaker's office. “Fifteen senators are expected to attend, and only 10 votes are needed to override the veto of the governor,” said Carlo Branch, senior policy advisor for Cruz.
Lawmakers in late August voted 12-3 to approve the budget bill. Democratic Sens. Frank Aguon, Jr., and Mike San Nicolas and Republican Wil Castro voted against it.
Calvo, disappointed with the Legislature's final version of the bill, said the Guam Visitors Bureau needs more money to continue growing tourism. He also expressed concern there is inadequate funding for the Department of Corrections to provide food, medical and dental care for inmates as well as hire more officers.
