Trump Today: Newsom calls Spicers marijuana take grossly uninformed

The day after White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer warned states of “greater enforcement” of federal laws against marijuana use by President Trump’s Justice Department, Lt. Gavin Newsom called Spicer’s comments “grossly uninformed.”

In a letter to Trump Friday, Newsom urged the president to allow California and the seven other states and Washington, D.C. that have legalized recreational marijuana — including Oregon and Washington — to enforce their own laws governing its use.

“The government must not strip the legal and publicly-supported industry of its business, and hand it back to drug cartels and criminals,” Newsom wrote.

Newsom called federal policy on marijuana use “draconian and prohibitionist” adding that the drug being outlawed has allowed the black market to flourish.

Newsom said that California’s legal marijuana marketplace will include a series of protections designed to keep it out of the hands of children and others to keep it safe: “rigorous” lab testing, “seed-to-sale” tracking systems and tough packing regulations.
