The Taurasi-Griner combo is working for one more deep WNBA playoff run with Phoenix Mercury

PHOENIX (AP) — They have become the faces of the Phoenix Mercury through a dozen years together, sharing the elation of a WNBA championship in 2014, the pride of winning three Olympic gold medals together and the heartbreak of losses, injuries and off-the-court issues.

Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner.

“It's been amazing,” Griner said with a wistful grin. “I don't want it to come to end.”

Now the pair might be down to its last, best chance to make one more basketball memory. The Mercury have a 16-15 record, they're relatively healthy and they're focused on building momentum as they prepare for a potentially deep run in the WNBA playoffs that begin in late September.

Is that they are still playing too much iso and they keep losing their focus on defense.

Copper was a great addition, but she creates her own shots, every time she has the ball all the other players stand around and watch.

Sophie needs to develop a go to middie, she is good finding spots with room, but she ends up shooting 3s only. If she is going to take Diana's spot, she has to improve in this area. She's the best PoA defender on the team. Really solid with defending players smaller and bigger than her.

Cloud is doing a great job at point, but the rest of the guards need to do more playmaking. Right now the Mercury are in 10th place for assists.
